Anders Sandrew Foundation donates SEK 50 million over five years (possible extension of a further five) to establish a brand new institute – the Anders Sandrew Institute for Culture and Creativity, and a Chair in Digital Art History. It will concentrate the University’s research in the broad field of culture and creativity, and show the importance of culture for social and community cohesion.
Uppsala University’s Main Building is one of the few well-preserved intact milieus from the 1880s and has a unique position in Swedish architecture. Uppsala University inaugurates a new research institute, UUniCORN, aimed at identifying, analysing and navigating conflicting objectives in sustainable societal transition. The new institute is set up on the initiative of Vice-Chancellor Anders Hagfeldt as part of Uppsala University’s ambition to be a more active partner in creating an ecologically, socially and economically sustainable society.
Uppsala University will celebrate 550 years 7 October 2027. Ahead of this occasion, a jubilee campaign is being launched today: “Boundless knowledge – since 1477”, whose aim is to further strengthen the University’s research. The goal is to raise SEK 1 billion by 2027, and the campaign is already halfway towards that goal. Today’s ceremony in the Grand Auditorium will highlight this year’s donors.
Vice-Chancellor Anders Hagfeldt has appointed Jenny Helin, Senior Lecturer at the Department of Business Studies, as Adviser to the Vice-Chancellor on Campus Gotland. The role of the Adviser to the Vice-Chancellor is to advise the Vice-Chancellor on matters concerning Campus Gotland and to develop the University’s activities there.
He opened up a completely new field of research by sequencing the genome of our long-extinct relatives. For his scientific accomplishments, Svante Pääbo was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 2022. He has now been named Uppsala University’s Alumnus of the Year 2023.
The Johan Skytte Foundation is delighted to announce that Alexander Wendt and Martha Finnemore have been jointly awarded the Johan Skytte Prize in Political Science. The prize is a recognition of their exceptional contributions to the field, particularly in advancing the constructivist approach to the study of international relations.

Uppsala University is inaugurating the Alva Myrdal Centre for Nuclear Disarmament, a national centre for global knowledge on disarmament issues. UN Under-Secretary-General and High Representative for Disarmament Affairs Izumi Nakamitsu will address the inauguration ceremony remotely, while speakers attending the event include Beatrice Fihn, ICAN, recipient of the 2017 Nobel Peace Prize.
It is 400 years since Johan Skytte founded a professorship in eloquence and political science. His intention was to strengthen the state administration that Sweden needed to maintain its position as a European great power. The Johan Skytte Professorship is the oldest active chair in political science in the world. To mark the 400th anniversary, lecture and panel debate will be held 1 October.
Professor Robert Goodin, Australian National University, is the recipient of the 2022 Johan Skytte Prize in Political Science. He is awarded the prize for a number of works over several decades in which he “with acuity and success endeavoured to blend political philosophy with empirical political science to increase the understanding of how decent and dignified societies can be shaped”.
